FTC: History sniffing smells bad

(December 17, 2012) -- A unanimous vote by the Commission has ratified a consent agreement with a company that crossed the line between clever online technology and invasion of consumers’ privacy. The order bars Epic Marketplace, Inc. and Epic Media Group, LLC, from continuing to use so-called “history sniffing” technology that “sniffs” a browser to learn what sites consumers have visited in the past. The order also bars future misrepresentations and requires Epic to destroy information that it gathered unlawfully....
