Fraud complaints down but loss totals up

The Federal Trade Commission and other law enforcement agencies received 1.1 million complaints of fraud last year and the losses totaled $905 million, according to the Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book released Thursday.

The fraud complaints represented almost 43 percent of the nearly 2.7 million grievances that consumers voiced about their marketplace encounters, a decline from 3 million in 2016. The $905 million figure for fraud losses shows an increase of $63 million over what consumers said they lost in 2016.
