Mortgage relief scams

(August 2, 2012) -- The Federal Trade Commission, as part of its crackdown on scams that exploit folks in financial distress, won a temporary restraining order that shut down a nationwide con that targeted financially-distressed Spanish-speaking homeowners. These consumers were allegedly falsely promised relief on their monthly mortgages so long as they forked over large upfront fees. In fact few homeowners received anything of value, according to the complaint filed in the Northern District of Illinois on July 23....
