Smart TV makers need FTC scrutiny, Senate duo says

Owners of Internet-connected TVs may not realize they’re equipped with software that collects information about what they’re watching to deliver targeted ads. And that’s raising some serious concerns about consumer privacy among lawmakers.

Two Senate Democrats are now urging the Federal Trade Commission to investigate, citing a news report that described how data company Samba TV surreptitiously tracks smart TV owners’ viewing habits. Samba TV has deals with about a dozen TV brands, according to the report.
