Market collusion by bots? Experts say it’s not so far-fetched

Imagine the headline: FBI says algorithms, acting alone, rigged bids.

Right now, it remains in the province of science fiction, though experts have begun to warn that once far-fetched scenario could come to pass if companies aren't mindful.

Pricing algorithms themselves aren't news. Companies use them in a variety of ways to try to, ideally, wrangle as much money as possible out of consumers.

One type of algorithm might look to a competitor's prices and then go lower. Another might use a data broker's demographic information...
